# Fields

> Fields are blanks you fill in each time you insert a snippet: text, names, numbers, prices, dates, times, ranges, choices and buttons.

A field is a blank in the body. When you insert the snippet, each field becomes a box in a small form. You fill the boxes in, press <kbd>Enter</kbd>, and the finished text goes in.

Add fields from the **Fields** group in the panel on the left of the editor. Each one opens a small window that writes the field at the cursor, so you never have to type the code yourself.

## Text

One line of text, like a name or a reference.

* **Name**: what the box is called in the form. It starts as `TEXT_1`, and you can type your own.
* **Default** (optional): text the box starts with, so only the unusual answer needs typing.
* **Person name**: capitalises a typed name in the snippet's language. `giovanni rossi` prints as `Giovanni Rossi`. The default prints as written. It turns on by itself when the field's name includes name, nome, nombre or nom, like `CLIENT_NAME` or `nomecliente`, but not for the name of a company, product or file. Switch it off to print exactly what was typed.

## Number

A quantity: a price, a count, a duration. A number field always holds a number, so formulas can use it.

* **Format**: **Plain** prints the number as typed. **Currency** adds the symbol and two decimals. **Percent** adds `%`.
* **Currency**: EUR (€), USD ($), GBP (£), CHF, CAD (CA$), AUD (A\$) or JPY (¥, no decimals).
* **Default** (optional). A blank default opens empty, which is not the same as 0.

People can type `1.200,50` or `1,200.50`. Both read as the same number.

  Phone numbers, order references and postcodes are not numbers. They lose a leading zero and can't hold `+` or spaces. Use a Text field for them.

## Date and time

Pick a format, then click **Date** or **Time**.

Date boxes open on today. While filling, you can change the format, jump to a day or set a time, for that insert only.

For two dates, click **Date** twice: the second one arrives as `DATE_2`.

## Automatic date

**Automatic** writes a date that works itself out when the snippet expands. Nobody fills it in.

* **Which day**: **Today**, **Count forward** (days, weeks, months, years, hours or minutes, or backwards), or **A named day**: Tomorrow, Yesterday, Next Monday to Next Sunday, Start or End of this month, Start or End of next month.
* **What time**: switch on **Print a time as well** to print a fixed time, the same one every time. Minutes go in steps of five.

The window shows how the date prints today before you insert it.

## Date range

**Range** writes two dates and how long the span between them is.

* **The dates**: add two new date boxes, or use two dates already in the body.
* **What to print**: **Days between the two dates** (1 to 3 September is 2), **Counting both dates** (3), or **Both**.
* Type the word that follows each number yourself, in your own language.

The end date can't be set before the start date. You can add a time to both dates. It doesn't change the count.

## Choice

**Choice** builds a list of options to pick from while filling.

* **Values**: the options. Tick one to have it selected from the start. Drag the handles to reorder them.
* **Selection**: **Single Choice** shows round buttons, **Multiple Choice** shows tick boxes.
* **Name** (optional): only needed if the body repeats the choice somewhere else.

To change a list later, put the cursor inside it and click **Edit this menu**.

## Button

A **Button** changes numbers while you fill the form, like a "10% off" button. It never appears in the message.

* **Label**: the text on the button. Left blank, it reads **Run**.
* **What it does**: each line sets one field, for example `PRICE` = `PRICE * 0.9`. Later lines use the results of earlier ones.
* **Spacing**: whether the button removes the space around it, so it leaves no blank line behind.

## Writing fields by hand

You can also type fields straight into the body:

To repeat a field's answer elsewhere in the body, write its name in braces, like `{CLIENT}`.
